APPENDIX F
TORQUE LIMITS
F-1. ENGINE TORQUES.
a.
To prevent faulty assembly, the following information includes instructions on the tightening of heavy-duty bolts.
Because the procedure differs from that normally employed, the tightening angle is particularly important. The various
angles can be readily obtained by comparison with a clock face.
b.
To obtain the desired angle, the handle extension of the wrench must be turned by the same angle as that
formed by the hour and minute hands of a clock. The 60° angles of a hex head bolt can also be a help.
(1)
Wet threads and seatings with motor oil before fitting.
(2)
Screw the bolts in until they are squarely seated, using a socket wrench without handle extension or a box
or ordinary wrench without making use of the leverage.
(3)
Preload the bolts by holding the handle extension so that both hands are in contact with the wrench. When
using a box or ordinary wrench for preloading, the tip of your straight thumb holding the wrench must touch the head of
the bolt, (4) Tighten the bolts according to Table F-1, if necessary in stages, in conformity with the tightening angles
specified,
