NOTE
T h i s procedure goes all the way through disassembly and
a s s e m b l y . It is only necessary to disassemble the recoil
s t a r t e r assembly enough to correct the fault. After the
d e f e c t i v e parts have been removed it is possible to assemble
t h e recoil starter assembly from that point.
( 1 ) Remove recoil starter assembly (1) from flywheel shroud. If it is not necessary to
r e m o v e the starting pulley (2) from the flywheel, leave it there.

P u l l about 14 inches (355 mm) of rope (3) out of recoil starter assembly (l).

P r e s s thumb against ratchet retainer (4) to prevent reel (5) from unwinding.
(4)
Lock rope (3) in notch on outer rim of reel (5).
R e l e a s e thumb pressure against ratchet retainer (4) and let power spring (6) unwind.

Twist loop of return spring (7) so that it will slip t h r o u g h slot in ratchet retainer (4).
