CHAPTER 3
UNIT MAINTENANCE
Section I.
LUBRICATION INSTRUCTIONS
3-1
GENERAL. The objective of this section is to present the operator with engine and compressor lubrication
instructions.
3-2
OIL VISCOSITY. The viscosity of the oil is greatly influenced by the ambient temperature; therefore, the choice of
the oil should be governed by the ambient temperature at engine site (figure 3-1). When temperatures temporarily fall
below the limit of the oil selected, this will merely affect the starting performance but cause no engine damage.
Figure 3-1. Oil Viscosity Chart
Since a too viscous oil causes starting difficulties, the choice of the viscosity grade during winter operation should be
governed by the ambient temperature prevailing at the time of engine starting. Oil changes as a function of ambient
temperatures can be avoided by using multigrade oils, which are again subject to the oil change intervals recommended.

LUBRICATION OF ENGINE . For proper care and maintenance of the engine, using the correct viscosity of oil and
adhering to the maintenance procedures is of vital importance. It is required that the oils used in the engine conform to
the chart (figure 3-1).
