Remove field coil (87) and plate insulator (84) from field frame (5).

CLEANING AND INSPECTION
WARNING
Dry cleaning solvent, P-D-680, is toxic and flammable. Always wear protective goggles and
gloves, and use only in a well-ventilated area. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothes, and DO
NOT breathe vapors. DO NOT use near open flame or excessive heat. The solvent’s flash point Is
100°F-1380F (380C-590C). If you become dizzy while using cleaning solvent, Immediately get fresh
air and medical help. If solvent contacts eyes, immediately wash your eyes and get medical aid.
1.
Clean all metal parts, except armature, field coil, and starter drive, with dry cleaning solvent.
2.
Clean starter drive with clean dry cloth.
3.
Inspect field frame for cracks, breaks, and other obvious damage.
4.
Inspect armature shaft for rough surfaces and damaged splines.
5.
Inspect commutator contact surface for rough surface, pits, scoring, bums, hard carbon, oil coat, and out-of-round.
Commutator diameter, when new, is 2.3125-2.3250 in. (58.7375-59.0550 mm). Commutator diameter may not be
less than 2.0 in. (50.8 mm) when returned to service. Commutator may not be more than 0.002 in. (0.051 mm)
out-of-round.
