Figure 37-Continued.
(2) Hook up a timing light, with the high tension lead to the No. 1 spark plug and the remaining two leads to the
proper battery terminals.
(3) With the engine idling, direct the timing light into the inspection hole and check the position of the timing
mark on the flywheel with the timing pointer. If the mark is past the pointer before the flash occurs, the
timing is slow. If the flash occurs before the mark gets to the pointer, the timing is fast.
b. Adjusting the Timing.
(1) Loosen the hex nuts (21, fig. 37) that clamp the distributor adapter to the crankcase cover.
(2) With the engine idling and the timing light directed at the inspection hole, rotate the distributor housing
slowly in one direction or the other until the timing mark coincides with the timing pointer when the light
flashes. If the timing is slow, turn the distributor housing counterclockwise. If the timing is fast, turn the
distributor housing clockwise.
(3) When the ignition timing has been properly adjusted, tighten the adapter clamp hex nuts securely and
disconnect the timing light.
