T h e table in this section lists the common malfunctions which you may find during the
o p e r a t i o n or maintenance of the air compressor or its components. You should perform the
t e s t / i n s p e c t i o n and corrective maintenance in the order listed.

T h i s manual cannot list all malfunctions that may occur, nor all test or inspections and
c o r r e c t i v e actions. If a malfunction is not listed or it is not corrected by the listed corrective
a c t i o n , notify your supervisor.

E N G I N E / C O M P R E S S O R BEARINGS OVERHEAT.
1.
C h e c k that proper oil level is visible through sight gage or engine dipstick.
I f oil level is normal, notify Forward Intermediate Maintenance.
2.
E N G I N E / C O M P R E S S O R SPEED SLOWS DOWN.
C h e c k engine speed control or governor setting.
I f engine speed control setting is abnormal, correct setting.
I f engine speed control or governor setting are normal, replace engine.
3.
S E V E R E VIBRATION.
S t e p 1. Check for damaged engine pulley and damaged compressor flywheel.
I f engine pulley or compressor flywheel is damaged, replace damaged part.
I f engine pulley is wobbling, replace engine.
I f compressor flywheel is wobbling, replace compressor.
4.
L I T T L E OR NO AIR PRESSURE BUILDUP.
S t e p 1. Make sure belt tension idler is engaged.
S t e p 2. Inspect for leaking drain valve.
I f drain valve is leaking, replace the drain valve.
