MALFUNCTION
TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. ENGINE IS HARD TO START OR FAILS TO START.
Step 1. Check that engine does not have a heavy starting load. Operate com-
pressor interstage safety valve; hissing will indicate compressor pump
under load.
Step 2. Check compression. Spin flywheel clockwise (flywheel side) against com-
pression stroke. A sharp rebound indicates satisfactory compression.
Slight or no rebound indicates poor compression. If compression is poor,
look for:
a. Loose spark plug.
Tighten.
b. Loose cylinder head bolts.
c. Blown or leaking cylinder head gasket.
Step 3. Check ignition - try a new spark plug. If engine dews not start look for:
a. Incorrect armature air gap (blower housing removed) (para 4-31).
check air gap. Set gap if necessary.
